Description
Fecal S100A12 (Calgranulin C, EN-RAGE) is a novel non-invasive marker distinguishing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or healthy individuals with a high sensitivity and specificity.
Interaction of S100A12 with cellular RAGE (Receptor for advanced glycation end products) on endothelium, mononuclear phagocytes, and lymphocytes, triggered cellular activation, with generation of key pro-inflammatory mediators.
S100A12 stool concentrations can be used as an indicator of inflammation activity in Crohn‘s disease and colitis. Since S100A12 is secreted by activated neutrophils and acts as a pro-inflammatory mediator, it can be used as marker to aid in the diagnosis and therapeutic control of inflammatory bowel diseases.
