Like lipase and elastase, the pancreatic amylase is synthesized in the pancreas. In case of a chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic amylase is decreased. Some forms of disease associated with a pancreatic insufficiency include alcoholism and accidental trauma. In the routine laboratory, pancreatic amylase has proved itself to be a genuine alternative to elastase-I in stool diagnosis.
