The detection of haemoglobin in stool can be used as marker for gastrointestinal bleedings and aid in colon cancer prevention.
Tumours and polyps are a possible source of blood in stool. After the detection of haemoglobin, a colonoscopy should be performed to clarify if the blood comes indeed from a tumour or a tumour precursor.
