Description
Gamma-aminobutyric acid or γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the most prevalent and most important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system.
GABA counteracts the excitatory catecholamines and likewise attenuates the endocrine stress response.
GABA helps stabilizes blood pressure, regulates appetite, has anxiolytic and sleep-inducing effects. It is synthesised from glutamic acid, a non-essential amino acid, which in turn functions as an excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and can also be considered as an antagonist of GABA. Very low GABA concentrations have been linked to disorders such as depression, autism or hypertension.
